Kyocera Receives 16th Consecutive Recycling Award from City of San Diego

"Recycler of the Year" Award recognizes company's local and national environmental initiatives

SAN DIEGO Kyocera Communications Inc. today received the "2016 Recycler of the Year" award from the City of San Diego's Environmental Services Department (ESD) for its outstanding recycling and waste reduction efforts. This is the ninth time Kyocera has been named Recycler of the Year and the 16th consecutive year the company has received a recycling award from the City of San Diego. Kyocera has earned a total of 24 environmental awards from the City – more than any other San Diego company.

As part of its ongoing environmental-awareness initiatives, Kyocera is today holding its fourth annual Earth Expo. Open to the public from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the event features more than 55 Earth-friendly organizations exhibiting their products and services under the "Solar Grove" at Kyocera's North American headquarters (8611 Balboa Ave., San Diego, CA).

"Kyocera has a global philosophy and commitment to social responsibility, and here in San Diego, we strive to set a strong example," said Chuck Becher, vice president and general manager of sales and marketing at Kyocera Communications. "We believe the stewardship of San Diego's environment is the responsibility of the companies who conduct business here, and we are greatly honored to be recognized by the City of San Diego for our leadership and ongoing dedication to environmental initiatives."

In its fiscal year that ended March 31, Kyocera Communications recycled 92 percent of the waste it generated, including paper, plastic, electronic and other waste materials otherwise destined for landfills. As part of Kyocera's ongoing commitment to the environment, the company also established a national cell phone recycling program, which is free to consumers wishing to dispose of unused mobile phones of any brand. The program is facilitated by SecondWave Recycling, a socially responsible organization that facilitates free phone recycling to support charities. For every four phones recycled for their raw materials, a donation of $1 is made to Cell Phones For Soldiers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing cost-free communication services to active-duty military members and veterans. A longstanding supporter of Cell Phones For Soldiers, recycling proceeds from Kyocera's recycling efforts have provided more than 50,000 minutes of long-distance service for members of the U.S. military.
